The Journey of RisingWave's Branding Evolution

The Journey of RisingWave's Branding Evolution

Introduction and Early Branding Stages

Hello from the founding designer of RisingWave Cloud! Over the past two years, RisingWave has achieved numerous milestones as both a company and a product. Every member of our hardworking team shares in the honor and happiness of these accomplishments. As a proud member of the RisingWave team from its earliest stages, I have been involved in all aspects of design, including product design, branding, and marketing. It was only recently that we brought on our talented Visual Designer. As RisingWave continues to gain popularity and strength in all areas, I believe it would be wonderful to share the interesting and exciting journey we have taken in evolving our branding.

Let's turn back the clock to 2020 when Dr. Yingjun Wu assembled a talented team to shape the future of streaming data. Thus, "Singularity Data" was born, with the name reflecting the team's ambition to create a historic impact on stream processing technologies.

Brand Evolution and Maturation

As our product idea solidified, we realized that "RisingWave" was a more fitting name for the product we were developing. The vibrant "wave-like" symbol embodies the youthful, fun, and energetic nature of our technology.

We launched the Beta version of RisingWave in April 2023 and released the GA version not long after. Our branding quickly evolved to reflect the rapid maturation process of the RisingWave product. We unveiled a completely new branding, featuring a sleek logo resembling ocean tides, customized fonts, and a fresh color theme that conveys trustworthiness and reliability. Alongside the rebranding, we introduced a brand-new official website with a completely redesigned look and feel.

As we look back on the relatively short journey of our branding evolution, it is truly fascinating to witness the transformation and growth of RisingWave. From our initial ambitious ideas to a dynamic exploration, we have embarked on a path that has allowed us to establish a unique identity in the stream processing market. Our brand now exudes a timeless and sophisticated aesthetic, symbolizing our commitment to cutting-edge technologies.

Since the Beta release, RisingWave has proudly showcased its new logo, featuring a more refined and serious single branding color: blue. This updated visual identity gives our brand a mature and polished appearance. Our incredibly talented visual designer, Nika, has been instrumental in consistently presenting our branding across all platforms, performing his magic with precision.

Recent Developments and Future Outlook

However, as our community continues to grow, there is an increasing demand for more vibrant colors that go beyond the single serious tone of blue. In response to this, we have embarked on the creation of a second set of branding colors specifically designed for community use, aiming to enhance our social and public image. To achieve this goal, our dedicated community manager, Jovana, and Nika, our talented visual designer, have been working tirelessly, engaging in discussions and conducting a series of explorations to incorporate bright colors that attract attention while maintaining a professional spirit. After much creative effort, Nika has successfully developed an impressive new visual series that complements the formal and serious RisingWave branding.

Now, let's hear from Nika himself about the challenges and insights gained during this exciting creative process.

Our goal was to strike the perfect balance between sophistication and playfulness. We started by brainstorming how to incorporate fresh, vibrant colors to make us stand out. We needed to retain the elements that made RisingWave recognizable to our audience while infusing new components into our brand identity. This led us on a journey of sketching, prototyping, and experimenting with various concepts.

We experimented with a dynamic range of colors, including purple, red, green, and yellow, integrating them into our existing palette. This involved numerous experiments, testing with mockups, and in-depth discussions on various aspects. Our focus extended beyond aesthetic appeal; we also evaluated how these colors aligned with our goals.

After careful deliberation and numerous revisions, we ultimately decided on fluorescent colors for their vibrancy and energy. However, incorporating these bold hues into our visuals without overpowering the design proved to be a significant challenge. To address this, I created a presentation with visual guidelines that define the use of each color across various communication channels, ensuring consistency and harmony throughout our brand.

Now, let's look at the updates of our new identity for the community:

The updated visual style embraces bright and bold colors, with a primary focus on representing our ever-growing community and the creative contributors.
